Melbourne City returns to the continental stage on Sunday afternoon, with a blockbuster AFC Women’s Champions League Quarter Final clash against Uzbekistani outfit PFC Nasaf awaiting at the Home of the Matildas.
After months of focusing on domestic duties, Michael Matricciani’s side will now look to transfer its strong Ninja A-League form onto the Asian stage, with a place in the Semi Finals on the line in what shapes as a massive afternoon of football in Melbourne.
Here are the major storylines heading into Sunday’s clash.
Continental football resumes
After a four-month pause, City’s AFC Women’s Champions League campaign is finally back underway, with plenty of momentum built through an impressive domestic season.
Matricciani’s side has once again been one of the standout teams in the Ninja A-League, sitting on top of the table heading into the final round of the regular season and firmly in the hunt for a historic third consecutive Premiers Plate. While there is still work to be done on that front, recent performances suggest City is peaking at the right time.

Following a challenging stretch in January, the team has responded strongly to go unbeaten in its last six matches, collecting four wins and two draws.
Most recently, City showed resilience and composure in a 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, overcoming an early red card to secure three crucial points thanks to first-half goals from Leticia McKenna and Bryleeh Henry.
With confidence high and form building, attention now turns back to continental competition.
Picking up where we left off
City will be looking to pick up right where we left off in the Group Stage, after we delivered one of the most dominant campaigns of any side in the competition.
Based in Vietnam in November, City swept through Group A with three wins from three matches, scoring 15 goals without conceding. It was a complete team performance, with attacking firepower matched by defensive solidity.
Holly McNamara was among the standout performers, entering the knockout stages as the competition’s leading scorer, while several teammates also made strong contributions in front of goal.

That depth in attack will once again be a key weapon as City looks to break down another opponent on Sunday.
There is also confidence to draw from last season’s run, where City translated a perfect Group Stage into a convincing 3-0 Quarter Final win at home over Taichung Blue Whale.

A repeat result would once again see City progress to the final four of Asia’s premier club competition.
A tough opponent awaits
Standing in City’s way is a Nasaf side that has proven its quality across multiple stages of the competition and arrives in Melbourne ready for a major test.
The Uzbekistani outfit booked its place in the Group Stage in dominant fashion, winning all three of its Preliminary Stage fixtures to progress.
While their Group Stage campaign wasn’t quite as emphatic as City’s, Nasaf still did enough to advance to the knockout rounds as one of the best second-placed teams, recording a win, a draw and a loss across their three matches.
Beyond continental competition, Nasaf’s pedigree is undeniable. They are a powerhouse in their domestic league, having claimed 17 league titles and winning an incredible 92 of their last 98 matches. That sustained success highlights the level of consistency and winning mentality within the squad.
Nasaf’s lineup is also heavily bolstered by international experience, with a significant portion of Uzbekistan’s national team featuring within the squad.

Having remained in Australia following the recent AFC Women’s Asian Cup, they will be well acclimatised to local conditions heading into Sunday’s clash.
With both teams now just one win away from the Semi Finals, City can expect a disciplined and confident opponent in what shapes as a high-quality contest.
