Patrick Beach’s outstanding FIFA World Cup campaign has been recognised with one of the tournament’s most remarkable statistics to date, further highlighting City’s ability to prepare players for football’s biggest stage.
According to Opta, Beach prevented 2.65 goals throughout Australia’s campaign, more than any goalkeeper following the completion of the Round of 32.
After enjoying a career-best season in City blue, Beach arrived at the tournament full of confidence and delivered a series of match-winning performances for the Socceroos.

The 23-year-old kept two clean sheets and produced several outstanding saves throughout Australia’s run, including a stunning reflex stop against Egypt in the Round of 32 that forced extra time.
His efforts saw him concede just two goals from 4.65 Expected Goals on Target (xGOT), the best return of any goalkeeper at the tournament through the Round of 32.
While Beach’s performances captured headlines around the world, they were just one chapter in a much bigger Melbourne City story.
The FIFA World Cup once again showcased the Club’s reputation as one of Australia’s premier producers of elite talent, with seven past and present City players representing the Socceroos on football’s biggest stage.
Current City trio Patrick Beach, Aziz Behich and Mathew Leckie featured alongside former City players Connor Metcalfe, Jordan Bos, Kai Trewin and Aiden O’Neill, underlining the pathway that continues to develop players capable of competing at the highest level.
