The wait is over. After a few weeks on the training pitch, Melbourne City returns to competitive action on Sunday afternoon when we travel to Northern New South Wales to take on Weston Bears FC in the Australia Cup Round of 32.
With a place in the Round of 16 on the line, Aurelio Vidmar’s side will be looking to kick off the 2026/27 campaign in style.
Before our City boys return to the pitch, here are a few things to keep an eye on.
Akka takes the armband
With Club captain Aziz Behich enjoying a well-earned break following the FIFA World Cup, Nathaniel Atkinson is set to lead City for the first time this season.
It’s a role that’s become increasingly familiar for the experienced defender, who captained the side on several occasions last campaign and remains unbeaten when wearing the armband.
While City is still building match fitness after returning for pre-season earlier this month, Atkinson’s leadership – alongside a core group of experienced players – will be invaluable as the new campaign gets underway.
A new era between the sticks
For the first time in two seasons, the race to become City’s first-choice goalkeeper is wide open.
Following Patrick Beach’s move to Troyes after his breakthrough FIFA World Cup campaign, Sunday’s Australia Cup clash could provide the first glimpse into one of the biggest selection battles of the season.
Academy graduate James Nieuwenhuizen and new signing Macklin Freke both loom as genuine contenders to start, while young goalkeeper Lachie Charles will also be hoping to build on the senior debut he made in this competition last year.
Nieuwenhuizen impressed whenever called upon last season, keeping a clean sheet on his A-League debut as City won both matches he featured in, while Freke arrives in Melbourne with 75 senior appearances to his name across the past five years.
Whether it’s Freke, Nieuwenhuizen or Charles who gets the nod on Sunday, it’ll be fascinating to see who earns first crack in what shapes as one of the most intriguing selection battles of the season.
Ready for a Cup run
The Australia Cup has provided plenty of memorable moments throughout City’s history.
From lifting the trophy in 2016 to a number of deep runs since, the competition has regularly delivered special occasions – and we’ll be hoping to add another this season.
Last year’s campaign came at a unique time, with a youthful side taking to the pitch as the Club balanced a shortened pre-season alongside preparations for the AFC Champions League Elite.
This year, with a longer pre-season behind us and no continental commitments on the horizon, Vidmar will have a much stronger squad at his disposal as City looks to book a place in the Round of 16 for the first time since 2023.
Standing in the way is a Weston Bears side making just its second appearance in the Australia Cup Final Rounds and eager to cause an upset on home soil.
