ALM REPORT: Sydney FC 0-1 City

Melbourne City secured a crucial 1-0 win away to Sydney FC on Tuesday night, delivering a performance full of attacking intent to claim what could prove to be a momentum-building three points.

Max Caputo’s second-half header ultimately proved the difference at Allianz Stadium, although the margin could easily have been greater on a night where City created a host of chances and controlled large periods of the contest.

The result sees City return to winning ways and take an important step forward in the push towards Finals football.

Team News

Aurelio Vidmar made two changes to the side that featured in Thailand last week, with Max Caputo and Kavian Rahmani both returning to the starting XI for the trip to Sydney.

The inclusions added fresh energy to City’s attacking setup, with the pair combining well throughout the evening as City looked to respond from a disappointing end to our AFC Champions League Elite campaign.

Starting XI: 1. Patrick BEACH (GK), 13. Nathaniel ATKINSON, 22. Germán FERREYRA, 26. Samuel SOUPRAYEN, 16. Aziz BEHICH (C), 8. Ryan TEAGUE, 30. Andreas KUEN, 47. Kavian RAHMANI, 28. Marcus YOUNIS, 14. Daniel ARZANI, 17. Max CAPUTO.

Substitutes: 40. James NIEUWENHUIZEN (GK), 2. Harrison DELBRIDGE, 11. Elbasan RASHANI, 19. Zane SCHREIBER, 35. Medin MEMETI, 36. Harry SHILLINGTON, 39. Emin DURAKOVIC.

What happened?

City made a bright start and should have opened the scoring inside the opening minutes. A sloppy giveaway from Sydney gifted Caputo a clear sight at goal in the third minute, but his effort was well saved by Harrison Devenish-Meares, who reacted sharply to keep the scores level.

The early exchanges were open and energetic, with City looking particularly dangerous going forward and committing numbers into the box. At the other end, Souprayen produced a crucial block, ensuring the match remained level.

After a fast start, the game settled into a more balanced rhythm, with both sides enjoying spells of possession. City began to assert control as the half progressed, building sustained pressure and creating a number of promising opportunities.

A flowing move midway through the half saw Rahmani combine neatly with Daniel Arzani before firing goalward, only for his effort to be blocked. From the resulting set piece, City went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Andreas Kuen unleashed a powerful strike that crashed against the crossbar.

The closing stages of the first half produced end-to-end action. City came within inches of scoring when Rahmani surged forward and found Marcus Younis, who cut the ball back for Caputo.

His effort beat the goalkeeper but was dramatically cleared off the line by Marcel Tisserand at the last possible moment. Sydney responded immediately, with a chance of their own flashing just wide as the sides went into the break locked at 0-0.

City carried that attacking intent into the second half and continued to threaten early. Caputo and Arzani both had half-chances as City looked to turn momentum into a breakthrough, while Germán Ferreyra was called upon to make a couple of important defensive interventions at the other end.

The deserved opener finally arrived in the 53rd minute. Arzani delivered an inviting corner into the area, and Caputo timed his run perfectly, rising above his marker to head home and give City a 1-0 lead.

City continued to push for a second goal, creating further opportunities as Sydney struggled to deal with the pressure. Kuen went close again shortly after the hour mark, attempting an ambitious effort from distance with the goalkeeper off his line, but he was unable to hit the target.

Vidmar turned to his bench midway through the half, introducing Elbasan Rashani before making a triple substitution that brought fresh energy into the side. The changes proved effective, with City maintaining control and continuing to threaten.

Younis produced a moment of brilliance in the 78th minute, turning his defender sharply before firing narrowly wide from a tight angle. Moments later, Rashani came within inches of doubling the lead, forcing a fingertip save from Devenish-Meares after being played through by Emin Durakovic.

Despite not finding a second goal, City remained composed in the closing stages. The back four stood firm under late pressure, dealing with a series of Sydney attacks, including a tense period of stoppage time where the home side pushed numbers forward.

City’s defence held strong, seeing out the match to secure a well-earned 1-0 victory on the road.

What’s next?

City will now turn our attention to another away assignment, returning briefly to Melbourne before travelling west to face Perth Glory on Sunday evening.

With the push for Finals football continuing, another important three points will be on offer, with kick-off set for 7:00pm AEDT, live on Paramount+.
