Melbourne City’s Powerchair Football team will return to the national stage when they compete at the National Club Championships 2024 in Brisbane during the last week of August.
Ahead of their campaign, Powerchair Captain, Luke David, was joined by Shaun Millett and Shaun Mott, as the trio visited the City Football Academy at Casey Fields.
David, Millett and Mott were greeted by Men’s Captain, Aziz Behich, Jimmy Jeggo, Jamie Young and James Nieuwenhuizen, who presented them with the team’s playing kit for the tournament.
In 2015, City became the first Melbourne-based A-League team to form a Powerchair team. Since then, the team has moved from strength to strength, continuing to inspire others to join the sport along the journey.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of Melbourne City and it’s been growing every year since we started back in 2015,” David reflected.
A life-long fan of the Club, the City Powerchair Captain opened up on what it means to wear the jersey.
“It means the world to me [to represent Melbourne City in Powerchair Football],” he said.
“I’ve always lived with a disability, and I never thought I would be able to play sport to begin with, but to be able to represent a Club that I love so much is just a dream come true.
“I’m very proud and lucky to have this opportunity and I make sure that every time I go on the court, I play for the badge and put all my effort in.”
After falling agonisingly short in a penalty shootout last year, City will be aiming to go one step further and bring home silverware when they take on the Powerchair Football National Club Championships in Brisbane, a competition made up of the 11 best teams from across Australia and New Zealand.
